Intercultural Summer Programme
This is a programme aimed at young people aged from 15 to 18 and is comprised of a 3 day stay in Madrid, a 2-3 week stay with a family in another region in Spain, and a 1 week period of volunteering with an NGO on a cultural activity or leisure time programme.
The objective of this programme is to provide each participant with an intercultural and educational experience from the point of view of their growth as a (global) citizen. It is about giving them opportunity to meet new people, go to new places, and understand other cultures, other ways of life and other ways of thinking… helping them to adapt themselves to new environments, to accept difference, to listen, to have dialogue. It is also about bringing them new understandings of the history and culture of our country.
In summer 2006, we welcomed seven groups with a total of 84 youths. Just as in previous years, we continued with the educational programmes in Andalucía, Cataluña, País Vasco and Galicia, and also introduced a new programme called “The three cultures in Spain”.
The youths that participated in this programme, as well as a cultural orientation session in Madrid, followed the educational programme “Three Cultures: Arabic Muslim, Jewish and Western Christian” in Toledo. Young people from the different cultures and origins lived and worked together, and had the opportunity to talk about values, traditions and religion, which is a characteristic of the city of Toledo, an example of multicultural coexistence since the middle ages.
This part was followed by a homestay with a family in Úbeda and then a voluntary programme with the Red Cross in Pamplona for seven days.
Through this programme, we wanted to offer total immersion in the ideas of interculturalism and social participation, both really important topics in terms of the functioning of society in general.
